2011 Wheel Gymnastics World Championships
Men's Senior Vault Finals
After a courageous and stunning effort, Cornell Freeney received fifth place in the vault final with a score of 7.10, despite
competing on an injured leg. The USAWGF commends Cornell on his hard work, dedication, and impressive competition.
Junior Boy's Finals
Jack Gomberg placed 4th in the spiral final (0.1 points from a medal) with a score of 7.10, 6th in the straight-line final with a
score of 5.40, and 6th in the vault final with a score of 6.55. Truly impressive results from a first year competitor.
Dave Ettelson placed 5th in the straight-line final with a score of 5.60, and placed 7th in the vault final with a score of 5.80.
Dave exhibited another great effort in his second world championships. The USAWGF expects great futures in wheel gymnastics
for both Jack and Dave.
All-Around Senior Men's Competition
Cornell Freeney received 11th out of 23 in the all-around competition at the 9th Wheel Gymnastics World Championships and
also qualified for the vault final after receiving 4th in that discipline. Cornell started his straight-line routine with furious excitement,
to the music of Haendels Sarabande. At the very end of his routine he had a slight mishap on the pressed handstand and narrowly
missed the rankings to be in the straight-line final. In the vault he performed a layout 1 1/2 twist forward. He received the fourth
highest score, qualifying him for the final competition. He had a difficult landing his second vault where he significantly bruised his
knee. This caused him to have some difficulty in the following and last discipline, spiral. His routine was very exceptional, but
missed his last element in the split small spiral, receiving a score just 0.2 below the next highest competitor from Belgium, just
missing the qualification for the spiral final. Overall Cornell had a great performance in his senior debut at the World
Championships.
All-Around Junior Boy's Competition
Dave Ettelson did an exceptional job at the start of his second World Championship appearance. He received 8th place in the all-
around competition with a total score of 18.60. After two difficult vaults, he scored a 6.35. On his straight-line routine he scored
a 6.95. On spiral he had a step out, but still scored a respectable 5.30. Dave qualified for both the vault and straight-line finals.
In his first World Championship appearance Jack Gomberg did very well, placing 7th in the all-around competition with a total
score of 20.35. Jack received an impressive score of 7.20 for his straight-line routine and an equally impressive score of 6.85 on
vault. For spiral, Jack received a 6.30. Jack qualified for finals in all three disciplines.
All-Around Senior Women's Competition
Assistant USAWGF National Coach and Argentinian team member Luisina Rosas also did very well in her first all-around World
Championship competition, ranking 23rd in a very difficult field of competitors. She had to compete first in the competition. On
her spiral she missed her second D element, resulting in a score of 6.05. Nevertheless, she had an absolutely beautiful routine and
was recognized by the experts for her difficulty and execution. Luisina had some problems in her straight-line routine as well,
primarily due to a recurring foot injury that has prevented her from intensive practice this spring. Still, Luisina did remarkably well
and drew the attention of all competitors.
Our four competitors showed energy and spirit during their performances and put on a convincing style with definite promise for
the future.
