WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024

In Göttingen, Germany, the 2026 Wheel Gymnastics World Championships served not only as a competition, but also as a reunion within Team USA and between international friends. From the moment they arrived at the hotel, athletes were surrounded and supported by countless teammates, coaches, judges, delegation members, and peers from other countries excited to ensure that they could both perform at their best and have plenty of fun throughout the week.

On Monday and Tuesday, scheduled training sessions offered the first opportunity to acclimate to the new gym and see athletes from other nations in action. Split between two time slots, members of Team USA were able to support each other by spotting routines and keeping each other company outside of their own practice time. Outside of training, time spent in the gym also became a space where teammates and international friends could better get to know each other over card games, meals, and fun challenges created by the hosts.

Come Tuesday evening, the opening ceremonies saw Team USA in uniform for the first time. After an incredible show put on by local gymnasts and performers, athletes marched in to the cheers of parents, judges, and delegation members who came out to support and enjoy the event. To close out the evening, Team Germany led all competitors in a lively flash mob dance, setting the energy for the days of competition to come.

All-around semi-finals for senior men followed by senior women made up the first of four days of competition. While some juniors showed up to support warm up, others were ready to cheer their teammates on from the stands. They were again joined by numerous parents and delegation members, and the team chant greeted each USA competitor as they took the floor. On Thursday, juniors and seniors swapped places for the boys and girls’ all-around semi-finals, and USA flags continued to be waved proudly from the stands. Cyr wheel all-around finals and artistic semi-finals also took place on Thursday, and spectators especially enjoyed watching the artistic programs of athletes from around the world.

Friday and Saturday offered several opportunities for Team USA to explore the town of Göttingen, and many greatly enjoyed a glimpse of the local culture, historic, and architecture. Although no competitors from the USA participated in the gym wheel all-around finals, our judges worked incredibly hard to ensure that all routines were evaluated diligently, and much of the delegation remained present to cheer on international friends and seek inspiration for future training.

Saturday’s gym wheel event finals and cyr wheel artistic finals saw incredible team spirits, with athletes enthusiastically waving USA flags and ribbons to cheer on our finalists. Following the closing ceremony, the farewell party was enjoyed by many as a chance to celebrate a successful world championships and the many friendships we made along the way. Although we waved goodbye to Göttingen, we continue to be grateful for the support of everyone who makes each world championship possible, and we look forward to the next one!
